Frequently Asked Questions

Student Health Services FAQs

Question: Is there anything that spells out the ASU billing process?

Answer: Students need to upload a copy of their insurance card at the time of visit.  If they do not bring a copy of their insurance or upload their insurance card within 24 hours (as noted on the billing sheet they receive at the time of visit), the student will be billed the full cost of the visit.  A few days after the visit, non-ASU students receive a billing message on the health portal.

Question: How do non-ASU students create use the portal for health services?

Answer: At the time of their first visit, UA or NAU students are set up in the patient portal to be able to send and receive messages.  This has to be done in person in order to verify patient information.  Patients are given information about how to access the portal and information about billing on a paper handout at this time.

Question: Do I need health insurance to attend medical school?

Answer: Yes, you need medical insurance to attend UA COMP. You can use private insurance or UA student health insurance. To sign up for Student Health Insurance, follow the guide to enroll in the plans for the Incoming 1st year medical students.

Question: Can I get Student Health Insurance outside of open enrollment?

Answer: Certain qualifying life events will allow one to come onto the plan outside of an open enrollment period, providing arrangements are made no later than 30 days from the qualifying life event. If you wish to be prorated onto the plan, please send an email from your official UA email to our office, chs-insurance@distribution.arizona.edu, with the following information: 1) Request to be prorated onto the plan, 2) Date of the Qualifying Life Event, and 3) Reason for loss of insurance coverage.

Question: What are Qualifying Life Events?

Answer: Examples of Qualifying Life Events include the following

Loss of existing health coverage:
Losing existing health coverage, including job-based, individual, and student plans
Losing eligibility for Medicare, Medicaid, or CHIP
Turning 26 and losing coverage through a parent’s plan

Changes in household:
Getting married or divorced
Having a baby or adopting a child
Death in the family

Question: What are the reasons students may be involuntarily removed from University of Arizona Student Health Insurance or denied coverage?

Answer: Students who are eligible for or enrolled under Medicare or Medicare Advantage are not eligible to enroll in University of Arizona Student Health Insurance.

There are a few reasons why your coverage could be removed. For instance, if you missed the open enrollment deadline, did not submit your prorate application details within the 30-day enrollment window for Qualifying Life Events, or are not meeting eligibility, including leaves of absence. If your student insurance is removed or your application is denied, Campus Health will send you a notice stating the reason for removal or denial. Medical students wanting to enroll in student insurance must do so during the open enrollment period or under a qualifying life event (involuntary loss of coverage).

Question: Does being UA student mean that I have access to medical services at any of the three state universities?

Answer: As a student of UA at COMP, you have access to the health services offered by the three state universities via the Health & Recreation (H&R) fee, but pricing will be dependent on the type of insurance plan you carry and what the health services location accepts.

Question: Are there recommended locations specifically for immunizations, especially if on a student health insurance?

Answer: Immunizations for active & enrolled students can be completed with an appt at all 4 ASU Health Services locations.

Question: What is considered a Leave of Absence (LOA) and where can I find information on LOA policies?

Answer: A Leave of Absence (LOA) is an absence from the curriculum for two weeks or longer, to learn more visit the LOA Page. If you are seeking an excused absence of less than two weeks, use the regular Absence Request Form.

Question: Is everyone eligible for the Student Discounted Rate, and do those rates apply to ASU and NAU health services?

Answer: The Student Discounted Rate is for any student assessed the H&R fee for services rendered at the UA Campus Health Service. If the student has their own insurance that we participate with, they can use their own insurance or choose to pay the discounted rate. Each university sets these discounted rates.

Question: Can I go to ASU or NAU for telehealth appointments?

Answer: ASU and NAU have both agreed to see UA students for in-person visits. This is due to billing restrictions with telehealth visits.  Therefore, UA COMP students should use UA telehealth or the telehealth services through providers approved by their non-UA health insurance.

Question: Are all the UA Campus Health Services available to me?

Answer: Eligibility for services at Campus Health is gained through the Health & Rec fee (main campus student) and/or through the optional health portion of the H&R fee that can be requested through our webpage. https://health.arizona.edu/arizona-online-azcast-distance-learner-students

Students not assessed the H&R fee have the option of requesting the fee. This would give them access to our services under the Student Discounted Rate or with their own insurance (as long as we're in-network with their plan). Students do not need to be enrolled for the Student Insurance to access our services.

Question: Am I required to pay the UA Health and Recreation (H&R) fee as a UA COMP student?

Answer: No. However, if you wish to access health care services through Campus Health, you can request the health portion of the H&R fee to be eligible for services. Note - if you enroll in the Student Health Insurance Plan, this fee will be automatically added.
